Trump Accounts are a new federal investment-savings program created under the 2025 tax-and-spending law known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill.” The program is designed to help children build long-term wealth by giving them access to tax-advantaged investment accounts from an early age. The accounts are administered by the U.S. Treasury and are invested primarily in low-cost stock index funds.

Who Is Eligible?   There are two levels of eligibility:
Opening an account: Any U.S. citizen under age 18 with a valid Social Security number can have a Trump Account established on their behalf. A parent, guardian, or other authorized adult must open the account.

Receiving the federal $1,000 seed deposit: Children born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028 qualify for a one-time $1,000 contribution from the federal government once the required enrollment process is completed. Children born outside that window can still have an account but do not receive the federal seed money.

Parents and other contributors may add up to $5,000 per year to the account. Contributions can come from family members, employers, charities, philanthropists, and even state governments.

How Many Children Have Signed Up?
Enrollment has grown rapidly. The IRS reported that more than 4 million children had been signed up by the end of March 2026, including more than 1 million children eligible for the $1,000 federal contribution.

More recently, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that enrollment has climbed to nearly 6 million children as the program approaches its full launch in July 2026.

Even with that growth, roughly 67 million eligible children remain unenrolled, according to recent reporting, meaning participation is still well below the total number of eligible U.S. minors.

How the Accounts Work
The accounts officially begin operating in July 2026. Parents can enroll through IRS Form 4547, the Trump Accounts website, or the newly released mobile app. The account remains under adult custodial control until the child reaches age 18. Funds grow tax-deferred and can later be used for purposes such as education, buying a first home, or starting a business.

Supporters argue that the accounts give every child a stake in the financial markets and encourage long-term investing from birth. Critics note that the accounts are less tax-advantaged than some existing savings vehicles, such as 529 college-savings plans, and that participation depends on families completing the enrollment process.

Trump Accounts represent one of the largest federal child-investment initiatives ever attempted in the United States. Every eligible child under 18 can open an account, while children born from 2025 through 2028 receive a $1,000 government-funded starting balance. Enrollment has reached nearly 6 million children so far, but tens of millions of eligible children have not yet signed up. Whether the program ultimately succeeds will depend on long-term participation, investment growth, and how effectively families take advantage of the opportunity.
