Benefits Toolkit – How Employers are Controlling Healthcare Cost

It’s no secret—health care costs in the United States have risen sharply over the past two decades. In fact, a study by the Journal of the American Medical Association found that U.S. health care spending increased by nearly $1 trillion from 1996 to 2015. In 2018, the average premium rose 3% for single
coverage and 5% for family coverage, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation’s Employer Health Benefits 2018 Annual Survey. The average premiums were $6,896 and $19,616, respectively, and employers shouldered the majority of those costs. As costs continue to climb at a steady rate each year, employers across the country are feeling the pressure.
